UN praises France
Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Ban Ki-moon praised the leadership of France in the UN climate change negotiations are taking place in Copenhagen since Monday.
“I appreciate the strong commitment and leadership of President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose commitment and leadership has become a means to bring us to the negotiations that started to happen now,” Ban said, as he met with his guest, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner at the United Nations.
“I appreciate the leadership and the commitment and support of the French government, which makes us be able to make a deal in Copenhagen,” he added.
Ban, who made climate change a priority issue since he took over the chair’s leadership on the world body in January 2007, said he pushed more than 105 leaders promised to attend the summit meeting in Copenhagen on December 18. “Our goal, our goal is to have a binding formal agreement as soon as possible in 2010,” he added.
“More ambitious, we expect strong agreement in Copenhagen have, easier, faster process that we do to achieve a binding formal agreement in 2010, as soon as possible.”
Meanwhile, Kouchner told a press conference, that his talk with Ban focused on issues of financial innovations to help the poorest countries in the fight against poverty, and achieve adaptation of climate change costly.
French Foreign Minister said that after the agreement was reached in Kopehhagen, it will submit to the United Nations system for implementation and monitoring of the agreement.
Climate change conference in Copenhagen opened historic Monday, warned the danger to mankind if world leaders fail to take advantage of that opportunity.
The impact of climate change on humanity was his own man-made droughts, floods, storms and rising sea levels. All was revealed at the beginning of the meeting that lasted 12 days.
